What Is a Flanker Fragrance?

A flanker is a new fragrance released under an existing fragrance's name, usually with a modifier like "Intense," "Night," "Sport," or "Parfum." It shares the DNA of the original but takes it in a new direction.

How Flankers Work

When a fragrance becomes a hit, the brand capitalizes by releasing variations. Dior Sauvage was so successful that it spawned Sauvage EDP, Sauvage Parfum, and Sauvage Elixir โ€” four fragrances sharing a name but each smelling distinctly different. Versace Eros has EDT, EDP, Parfum, and Eros Flame. Each flanker targets a different occasion, season, or demographic.

Common Flanker Types

Intense/EDP/Parfum: A richer, longer-lasting version of the original (Eros EDT โ†’ Eros EDP). Night: A warmer, darker version for evening wear (Azzaro Wanted โ†’ Wanted By Night). Sport/Fresh: A lighter, more athletic version for warm weather. Absolute/Extreme: Usually the most concentrated, most intense version available.

Are Flankers Worth It?

Sometimes flankers surpass the original. Sauvage EDP is widely considered better than Sauvage EDT. Azzaro Wanted By Night outsells the original Wanted. But other times flankers feel like cash grabs that dilute the original's identity. The best approach is to try flankers as decants before committing โ€” some will click better with your skin chemistry than the original.
