Every fragrance is built on a three-tier structure called a fragrance pyramid. Understanding it helps you predict how a cologne will evolve on your skin and why first impressions can be misleading.
Top Notes (0-30 minutes)
The first thing you smell when you spray. Typically light, volatile molecules like citrus (bergamot, lemon), herbs (lavender, mint), or light fruits. They create the first impression but evaporate quickly. A fragrance with amazing top notes but boring heart/base is called a "linear" composition โ it starts strong and fades flat.
Heart Notes (30 min - 3 hours)
The middle layer that emerges as top notes fade. Florals (rose, jasmine), spices (cardamom, cinnamon), and fruits (apple, pineapple) live here. This is the "true character" of the fragrance โ what you'll smell most of the day. Most compliments happen during the heart phase.
Base Notes (3+ hours)
The foundation that everything sits on. Heavy, long-lasting molecules: woods (cedar, sandalwood), musks, vanilla, amber, oud. Base notes provide depth, longevity, and the final impression. They're what lingers on your collar at the end of the day.
Why This Matters
Never judge a fragrance by its first spray. That's only the top notes โ they vanish in 30 minutes. The heart and base are what you actually wear all day. This is why decants are so valuable: you can experience the full pyramid over multiple days rather than making a snap judgment from a paper strip.
