How to Decant Perfume at Home: Step-by-Step Guide

Decanting is the process of transferring fragrance from a full-size bottle into smaller spray vials. Whether you want to sell decants or just make travel sprays for yourself, here's how to do it properly.

What You Need

Blunt-tip syringes (5-10ml), small glass spray atomizers (2ml, 5ml, or 10ml), printed labels, and a clean workspace. Everything is available cheaply on Amazon. Don't use sharp needles โ€” blunt-tip syringes work perfectly for drawing from the bottle.

The Transfer Process

Remove the sprayer head from the source bottle by gently wiggling and pulling it off (most snap off). Insert the blunt syringe into the bottle opening. Draw slowly to avoid air bubbles. Transfer into the atomizer vial. Replace the source bottle's sprayer head when done.

If the Sprayer Won't Come Off

Some bottles are crimped shut (like Dior and Chanel). For these, spray directly into the syringe or into the atomizer vial. Hold the vial opening right against the nozzle and pump. It takes more sprays but avoids damaging the bottle.

Labeling

Always label immediately. Include the fragrance name, brand, concentration (EDT/EDP/Parfum), and the decant size. Once you have a dozen unlabeled vials, you'll never figure out which is which.

Hygiene and Quality

Use new syringes for each fragrance to avoid cross-contamination. Store filled atomizers upright. Glass vials are better than plastic โ€” plastic can interact with fragrance oils over time.
