You've smelled The One on someone and it stopped you cold. Now you're staring at three bottles with the same name on the box — EDT, EDP, and the new Parfum — and nobody at the counter can tell you which one you actually smelled.
They are not the same fragrance in different strengths. Two of them share a formula and one is a different scent entirely. Get this wrong and you'll own a bottle that smells "almost right" every single morning.

The short version: EDT and EDP are the same song at two volumes. The Parfum is a cover by a different band. Here's what that actually means on skin.
The One EDT: the original gentleman
The One for Men launched in 2008 and it still smells like a well-cut suit. The opening is grapefruit, coriander and basil — bright, a little herbal, never sharp. Within twenty minutes ginger and cardamom step forward with a touch of orange blossom, and that's the part people remember.
The base is where the magic is: cedar, amber and a soft, sweet tobacco. It's warm without being heavy and sweet without being a dessert. It reads as polished, confident, and slightly old-school in the best way.
The catch is performance. On most skin the EDT gives you three to five hours, and the last two of those are a skin scent. You'll smell it when you move. The guy next to you won't.
That's not a flaw if you want a scent that stays in your lane at work. It is a flaw if you sprayed at 7 a.m. for a 7 p.m. dinner.
Which is exactly the problem the EDP was built to fix.
The One EDP: same scent, turned up
The EDP arrived in 2015 with the same note list: grapefruit, coriander, basil up top; cardamom, ginger, orange blossom in the heart; amber, tobacco, cedar underneath. On paper it's identical. On skin it isn't.
The citrus opening is shorter and the amber-tobacco base shows up almost immediately. The sweetness is more obvious. The whole thing feels thicker and more enveloping, like the EDT after a glass of bourbon.
Longevity jumps to six to eight hours with moderate projection. You'll get the "what are you wearing?" within arm's reach for the first two or three hours, then it settles into a warm halo that lasts the day.
The trade-off: it's less office-safe. In a small room in the first hour it can feel a bit much. Two sprays, not four.
If you tried the EDT and thought "I love this but it vanishes," stop reading and buy the EDP. If you thought "I love this but it's a bit sweet," keep going, because the Parfum went a different direction.
The One Parfum (2025): not an upgrade, a rewrite
This is the one that causes the confusion. The One Pour Homme Parfum launched in 2025 with a new perfumer (Jean-Christophe Hérault) and a new pyramid: orange, nutmeg and black pepper on top; labdanum, patchouli and clary sage in the heart; amber, tobacco and vetiver in the base.
Notice what's missing. No grapefruit, no ginger, no cardamom, no orange blossom. The sweet-spicy signature that made The One famous is gone, replaced by a peppery, resinous, slightly smoky amber.
If the EDP is a candlelit dinner, the Parfum is the whiskey bar afterward. It's darker, drier, more masculine in the old-fashioned sense, and it doesn't try to be charming.
Performance is where opinions split hard. Plenty of wearers report six to ten hours. A loud minority say it sits close to the skin and fades faster than a "Parfum" should. Amber-heavy scents are skin-dependent, so this is one you want to test, not guess.

Is The One a summer or winter fragrance?
Winter. All three versions are built on amber and tobacco, and amber blooms in cold air and turns syrupy in heat.
The EDT is the exception you can bend. Its lighter touch and shorter life make it fine for a cool spring evening or an air-conditioned office in summer. The EDP and Parfum on an 85-degree day will feel like wearing a scarf.
Rule of thumb: EDT from October through April, EDP and Parfum from October through March, nothing from this line at the beach.

Office
EDT, two sprays. It's the version coworkers will describe as "he always smells good" instead of "he always smells like something."
Date night
EDP, no contest. Sweet, warm, and close enough to the skin after hour two that it rewards getting closer. This is the version that earns compliments from the person you actually want them from.
Night out, bar, club
Parfum if you have it, EDP if you don't. Both have the warmth to cut through a crowded room; the Parfum's pepper makes it the one that doesn't smell like everyone else's The One.
Weddings and formal dinners
EDP. It's dressy without being loud, and it won't fade before the speeches.
Who should buy which
The first-timer: You've heard The One is a safe blind buy. Go EDP. It's the version that matches what people mean when they recommend it, and the performance means you'll actually get to enjoy it.
The office guy: You want something polished that won't announce itself in meetings. EDT. Keep it in your desk drawer and refresh at lunch.
The guy who owns the EDT and wants more: EDP. You already know you like the scent; now you'll get the whole day out of it.
The guy who found the EDP too sweet: Parfum. The pepper and vetiver cut the sugar. Just test it first, because the performance lottery is real.
The collector who wants both: EDT for day, EDP for night. The Parfum is a third scent, not a third strength, so it only belongs in a collection if you like it on its own terms.
Batch and reformulation worries
You'll find forum threads claiming the EDT was "ruined" at some point. The honest read: the EDT has been tweaked over 15-plus years like every long-running designer scent, and older bottles are reported to be a touch richer. Current bottles still smell unmistakably like The One.
The EDP has had fewer complaints, partly because it's younger. The Parfum is too new to have a batch history.
What this means for you: don't pay collector prices for a vintage EDT when the EDP gives you the richer version at retail.
