Some fragrances cost $150-400 per bottle. These are the ones you should absolutely try as decants before committing to a full bottle purchase.
Creed Aventus (~$400)
The most legendary men's fragrance. Worth trying to understand the hype, but at $400 per bottle, a $10 decant is the smart first step. Bonus: compare it to Armaf CDNI ($25 full bottle) and decide if the $375 difference matters to your nose.
Tom Ford Oud Wood (~$300)
The entry-level niche recommendation. Smooth, sophisticated oud-sandalwood. Beautiful fragrance, but you need to test whether "nice" justifies the price tag for you personally.
Dior Sauvage Elixir (~$150)
The most concentrated, most expensive Sauvage. Cinnamon, licorice, and lavender in a divisive composition. Some love it, some hate it. At $150, you want to be very sure before buying.
Bleu de Chanel Parfum (~$140)
The deepest BdC concentration. If you already own the EDT or EDP, is the Parfum different enough to justify another purchase? A decant answers that question for $8 instead of $140.
The Rule
Any fragrance over $100 should be tried as a decant first. No exceptions. The $5-10 decant cost is insurance against a $100+ mistake. Your wallet will thank you.
